Release trapped emotions and heal trauma

How Can EFT and EMDR Therapy Help You?

EFT and EMDR therapy in Chiang Mai, Thailand

The Chiang Mai Wellness Centre offers holistic therapy that integrates a variety of therapy modalities to help clients enjoy rapid drug-free therapy that works.  While EFT and EMDR therapy both stand in their own rights, they are extremely effective when integrated into a wider model of therapy including clinic hypnosis.

EFT and EMDR therapy both focus on healing repressed emotions.  They are both “open eyed” techniques that facilitate rapid change.  As both therapies create an energetic inner shift they can also be used as hypnotic inductions.

EFT (the emotional change technique) was originally developed by Gary Craig, with it’s origins lying in Hatha Yoga and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) was developed by Francine Shapiro as a primary modality for treating trauma.

EMDR uses stimulated eye movements, similar to those that occur naturally during REM sleep cycles in order to assist clients to process traumatic memories from the past.  EMDR has also been shown to be effective for releasing limiting beliefs and facilitating change.

What Is EFT and EMDR Therapy?

 The EFT Process

Through counseling, the therapist seeks to understand the structure of a client’s story, patterns of self thought, unresolved traumas and current day triggers and feelings.

During the EFT itself, the client is asked to maintain eye contact with the therapist whilst repeating affirmations that the therapist suggests and simultaneously “tapping” on energy points in the body.

The client is guided to “tap out” limiting beliefs and emotions and replace them with empowering ones.  Clients may be taught “self tapping” or another form of affirmation process as a form of therapy homework.

EFT tapping provokes a relaxation response in the body which naturally counters anxiety triggers.  Layers of thoughts and feelings are systematically worked through with the therapist helping the client to release layers of repressed emotion through the EFT protocol.

As the goal of any therapy is to resolve the emotions that reflect into personal challenges, the fast release of painful emotions that EFT provides is often a core part of therapy.  The affirmations identified within EFT work also form a basic of hypnotic suggestions offered to the subconscious mind in formal hypnosis.

What is trauma

Trauma may be defined as an event from the past that still holds an emotional response in the body when thought of in the present.  Traumatic experience upsets the status quote of our lives.

Examples of trauma include the breakdown of personal relationships, divorce of parents, sexual abuse and car crashes.  Losing one’s job can be traumatic as it might threaten the ability to support a family.

A feeling of loss of safety always accompanies trauma.  Traumatic experiences are a form of shock that results in activation of the fight and flight response within the body,

Every person has experience degrees of trauma in their life.  It might be said that the way that one responds to life challenges and processes them fundamentally shapes our personality.

The EMDR therapy process

EMDR breaks up trauma into it’s constituent elements, measuring each on a scale of emotional intensity.  The intensity of emotional response in the body is used to measure how each of these elements (or targets as they are referred to in EMDR) is being held in the now.

For example, a person who was mugged might experience a fear of going out by themselves. In therapy, they will be asked remember that traumatic experience and guided to bringing each element of the memory to mind.  At the same time, the therapist will periodically ask and measure the emotional reactions in the body.

Perhaps the memory of the sound of footprints approaching from behind elicits a powerful anxiety response and the memory of waking up in a hospital bed elicits another.  Each response will be scored on a scale on emotional intensity from 1-10.  By breaking up trauma into focused targets in this way, EMDR therapy focuses on processing one target at a time, by the order of intensity.

The therapist brings the memory and accompanying feelings to mind while simultaneously triggering sets of conscious eye movements and guiding the client in affirmations.  The EMDR technique achieves rapid integration of emotional targets leading to a reduction in the anxiety associated with the memory as a whole.
